Lead DevOps Engineer / Team Lead DevOps

Job description

DevOps at Sellics is a true collaboration between Developers and our small team of experts in cloud infrastructure and automation technologies. AWS is our cloud of choice, and we have no intention in the foreseeable future to use anything else. Terraform is our Infrastructure as Code language as choice for describing and automating our infrastructure. We use Jenkins to automate deployments of both infrastructure and applications. Our goal is to be able to rebuild our entire environment from a few simple CI/CD actions. We are achieving this goal by refactoring all of our infrastructure into a multi-account architecture that separates accounts by both team and environment, and ensuring that everything we do ends up somehow checked into git.

Our Terraform implementation makes heavy use of repeatable, shared modules that are co-developed by DevOps and developers in all of the teams who use them. We work together using something that starts to feel like an open-source model.

We need a personable guru of cloud engineering and architecture to provide leadership to our extended DevOps tribe of members across teams. To bring forward our ongoing quest to break up a monolithic code base and “click-click-click” built infrastructure into a set of repeatable “micro”services held together, secured and monitored by a consistent architecture, that is also defined by code. You should also have quite a bit of experience with agile practices like scrum/kanban and be able to lead stand-ups and keep team processes alive and part of our DNA.

Become native and then lead us, or just be a guru and keep spreading the knowledge and culture. In the beginning, you’ll have to get your hands dirty and dive deep into our codebase. However, we need a strong leader who will work with work to coach our team and build our processes, eventually either moving into a management role as we grow or help us find/train a manager as our team grows. You should not be religious about technology choice but passionate about good solutions.

You will

  • Provide leadership to a team of engineers
  • Drive DevOps Culture at Sellics
  • Continue to build our agile based practices and work to build and integrate with similar practices in other teams
  • Run our site and maintain the flow of our development process

    Job requirements

    We're looking for people with:

    • You have 7+ years working with linux/unix systems and network operations.
    • You have 3+ years working experience operating production web applications on primarily AWS based environments.
    • You have experience working in a cloud native environment with no physical infrastructure and mostly managed services.
    • You have 2+ years working experience with Terraform and can write/understand complex terraform 0.12 code and advance multi-provider/multi-state terraform implementations.
    • You’ve been the Principal/Lead Operations Engineer(leader/goto guy) in a dev team of 30-50 people and have former colleagues who sing your praises as a result.
    • You’re used to dealing with the fine line between developer productivity and information security, and have some understanding of what that means in a world with an ever growing set of regulations.
    • Audits surrounding information security, high-availability and business continuity and the systems and processes in place to survive them are under your belt.. Well managed access keys, and tight permission sets get you excited. Passwords in the clear lead to missing heartbeats.
    • You have solid production experience with containerization (Docker) and container orchestration using ECS and/or EKS..
    • You love working with other people, and are happy to support lots of engineers without “owning” anything yourself. This is about building the capabilities for developers to run their own infrastructure well, and the minimal controls required to keep our systems operational and our customer data safe.
    • You have recent experience working in a startup, small company, or other somewhat unstructured, fast-paced environment of constant change.

Why should you join Sellics? We offer:

    • A talented, quickly-growing company and engineering team
    • A very well-located office in the heart of Berlin Mitte incl. a rooftop terrace with pool
    • Flat hierarchies with open communication
    • High level of responsibility and space to develop
    • Flexible office hours
    • Urban Sports Club membership
    • A one week onboarding program, “Lunch & Learn” internal education sessions, Self Improvement Grant funding for external educational pursuits, and additional time off for professional growth
    • Remote working days
    • Free food and drinks, regular team events
    • Visa sponsorship and assistance for non-EU citizens
    • Participation in our all-expenses paid annual company trip
